WHAT WE DO & WHO WE ARE

Someone once said that making a film was a little bit like baking a cake - the right base ingredients, military style time management and a dash of creative flair. We can see the analogy.

We're rubbish at baking cakes but we do make damn good films.

Welcome to the world of Waste of Space.

The company is divided into two strands.

WASTE OF SPACE FILMS

will own and seek to develop IP with partners across the industry.

WASTE OF SPACE STUDIOS

is a radical rethink of the model of independent film production drawing on decades of our experience.

By looking to the past for inspiration we want to try and develop a new film culture in Britain. We want to make films more sustainable, collaborative and accessible for cast, crew and audiences alike.

Ben has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of film and has been known to spend an entire day in the cinema. He’s seen Berlin Alexanderplatz twice, all 15 ½ hours of it, and the second time was for fun. He likes to explore the darker side of life.

Kate, on the other hand, has a deep love of comedy which provides the perfect balance to the team dynamic. She will bore you to tears with her passionate love of the early oeuvre of Jeff Goldblum and maintains that his dancing in Between the Lines is poetry in motion. She enjoys the idiosyncrasies of modern life and how people manage themselves within it.

* DISCLAIMER -We will eat any cakes you send us.

THE TEAM

KATE KENNEDY

Kate Kennedy is an actor, writer and producer working across film, television and theatre. Trained at Trinity College Dublin, RADA and National Youth Theatre.

Her screen debut was in Russell T Davies’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream (BBC), followed by Sharon Horgan’s Catastrophe (Channel 4). She co-created, co-wrote and starred in the RTÉ sitcom Handy, winner of the Irish Film Board’s Comedy Initiative.

Internationally, Kate is best known for her leading role as Spartan Kai-125 in Paramount+’s epic sci-fi series Halo, produced by Showtime and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television. A popular series regular across both seasons, her performance was singled out by The Washington Post as “a bright light in the series, owning every scene.”

She starred in and produced the independent feature Haar, directed by Ben Hecking, which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. Her feature work also includes Freddy Syborn’s Damascene, Dean DeBlois’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon franchise and Muriel d’Ansembourg’s Truly Naked.

As a writer, performer and producer, Kate has created and starred in multiple short films, including The Fear, Malcolm, Dunk and Frank and Shell. Her one-woman stage show Hunch played to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival and was subsequently published by Oberon Books.

Kate is a highly regarded voice actor, with credits across major franchises including World of Warcraft, Warhammer, Final Fantasy, Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect and Lies of P.

Her stage work spans the West End, Soho Theatre, Royal Exchange Manchester, Liverpool Playhouse and extensive touring with Ireland’s Druid Theatre Company. She is a MonologueSlam champion and has received multiple Offie nominations for her theatre work.

Across her extensive work as an actor, writer and producer, Kate is dedicated to creating bold, original, character-driven stories and finding new ways to bring ambitious independent films to the screen.

BEN HECKING

Ben Hecking is an award winning director, writer and cinematographer who has been making films from an early age. He studied English Literature at the University of St Andrews and, upon graduation, worked in a variety of roles in the film industry - from development, production, post production and distribution - that have given him a good grounding in all aspects of the business.

He studied cinematography at the prestigious National Film and Television School (regularly voted one of the best film schools in the world) and graduated in 2012. Within a year he had photographed two ultra-low budget features that received critical acclaim - Joanna Coates' Hide and Seek won the Michael Powell Award at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2014 and Harry Macqueen's Hinterland was nominated for Best British Feature at the Raindance Film Festival.

In 2016 he wrote, directed, produced and photographed Provenance through the production company White Horse Films. Backed by Afinia Films' Amanda Atkins, the film won multiple awards and screened worldwide before receiving a release through Curzon Home Cinema in 2020. Afinia would also produce Jamie Hooper's 80's set horror The Creeping. Photographed by Ben, the film won over 40 awards at film festivals around the world before its streaming debut.

Their last collaboration was on Haar. The entire film was, uniquely, photographed on Super8mm Film and screened at the London Film Festival in 2023. Writing in Screen Daily, Fionnuala Halligan, praised the film as "... a sweet reminder of the power of small crews and a passion for craft."

His screenplay for Maelstrom was long listed for the BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Film scheme and he has a number of commissioned projects currently out for financing. Ben brings his considerable passion and expertise in film production and development to Waste of Space and is responsible for building the IP portfolio of the company.

In his spare time he is writing a "biography" of Gainsborough Film Studios, for which he received an Arts Council "Developing Your Creative Practice" grant, and the first in a proposed series of crime thrillers set in the early 20th Century.
